The Guiding Hand Initiative

Building Futures, Healing Lives

Empowering First Generation Learners and Marginalized Youth in Tanzania through Inclusive and Trauma-Informed Mentorship Spaces

About TGHI

Our Background

The Guiding Hand Initiative (TGHI) was born out of a deep recognition of the silent struggles faced by first-generation learners and marginalized youth across Tanzania. These young individuals, many of whom come from underserved communities, often navigate the educational system without role models, academic guidance, or access to resources that others may take for granted.

TGHI emerged to fill these gaps—not with charity, but with empowerment, mentorship, and opportunity. While there are numerous organizations addressing general education, TGHI uniquely focuses on first-generation learners and other marginalized groups such as teen mothers, orphans, youth with disabilities, and those living in remote or impoverished areas.

Our Vision

A future where every first-generation learner and marginalized youth in Tanzania has equal access to guidance, education, skills, and the opportunity to thrive.

Our Mission

To empower first-generation learners and underserved youth through mentorship, skills development, inclusive digital education, and climate-conscious community engagement.

Core Values

Equity

We believe in fair opportunities for all—regardless of background.

Empowerment

We equip youth with tools, mindset, and support to take control of their future.

Integrity

We operate with transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership.

Innovation

We adapt, create, and integrate modern solutions to tackle youth challenges.

Founder's Note

What It Truly Means to Be of Service – The Heart of TGHI

Barnaba Zakaria Madirisha
Barnaba Zakaria Madirisha

Founder & Executive Director

"We serve not for recognition, but because we know how it feels to lack support—and we choose to become the kind of help we once wished for."

Service from the Heart, Not the Ego

Anyone can serve. But not all service is genuine. Sometimes, people help others to be seen, praised, or remembered—not necessarily to make a real difference. At TGHI, we constantly ask ourselves:

  • Are we serving to be noticed?
  • Or are we truly trying to understand, uplift, and walk with others through their challenges?
True Service Means:
Listening, not assuming
Walking besides, not standing above
Serving from love, not from pride
Focusing on real needs
Small Acts, Deep Impact

Real service doesn't have to be big. Even small acts—a conversation, a lesson, a ride, a smile—can change someone's life. And the more we serve, the more we grow ourselves. With every person we help, our hearts expand, our understanding deepens, and our purpose becomes clearer.

Success Stories

Inspiring journeys of resilience, hope, and transformation

Anthony Werema Mwita is a 21-year-old first-generation learner who completed his A-level studies at Namwai High School, specializing in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB). He first graduated from secondary school in 2022, achieving Division One (1.12) and was selected to join Namwai High School for A-level studies. However, financial challenges and lack of guidance nearly forced him to discontinue his education.

Through the support and generosity of the TGHI family, Anthony received full financial and material assistance that enabled him to continue and successfully complete his studies.

He later graduated with Division One (1.8) at A-level and is now preparing to join Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Conservation and Management.

Impact: His story reflects the power of opportunity, resilience, and community support, and all that first-generation learners need to succeed.

By joining The Guiding Hand Initiative (TGHI), Masoud seeks to strengthen his voice in education and community development while advocating for equal opportunities and empowerment for all young people.

Role: Youth advocate representing first-generation learners and championing equal opportunities in education.
